Questions to Ask About Your Roofing Contractor

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 by Adam Gillette

Living in Texas, there are a handful of things you can be assured are going to happen on an annual basis.
1. It's going to rain in the spring, A LOT.
2. It's going to hail in the spring., sometimes the size of softballs.
3. When numbers 1 & 2 happen, roofers will flock from all over and attack your neighborhood like an army.

As a homeowner, it can be easy to get caught up in the hype that comes with this scenario. You will get 10-20 business cards stuck in your door and won't be able to take out the trash without being cornered by a pushy salesman who is promising you the world. In these scenarios, it is best to step back, take a deep breath and remind yourself of a few things that are paramount when choosing which contractor you are going to award with your work.

ASK YOURSELF THESE SIMPLE QUESTIONS WHEN CHOOSING YOUR ROOFING CONTRACTOR
IF THE ANSWER IS NO TO ANY OF THEM, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND FIND A CONTRACTOR WHO'S ANSWERS ARE YES

Are They A Locally-Owned Roofing Company?
Ask yourself, does a roofing company that travels from state to state “storm-chasing” really have your family and home’s best long-term interest at heart? Forget 3 years down the road, will they even be around in 3 weeks if something goes wrong with your roof? The most important thing is that you do business with a stable, local roofing company here in Dallas Fort Worth with an actual brick and mortar office, and not just a couple guys working out of a rental truck.

Do They Have Trained and Certified Damage Assessors?
95% of roofing companies hire salesman off the street and send them straight to your door with little-to-no formal training and zero certification. This “roofing expert” apt to waste your time because he will tell any person that lets him on their roof, that there home has severe damage. Make sure your roofing company has extensively trained and state-certified damage assessors on staff. They have gone through the exact same training as your insurance adjuster, knowing exactly what to look for, saving you time and money.

BBB Accredited BusinessAre They A Better Business Bureau (BBB) Certified Company in Dallas Fort Worth with an A Rating?
Start with trust. For over 90 years the BBB has helped DFW residents make better-informed decisions in whom they choose to do business with. No company is perfect, and from time-to-time things will go wrong, but the BBB tracks how a company deals with customers not just when things are great, but more importantly how they handle the situation when a couple of things don’t go perfectly. That’s the difference between an A rated and a C rated business. Google: “[roofing company name] BBB” to pull up any roofing companies BBB certification online

Do They Carry General Liability Insurance Coverage?
The Company should possess no less than $1,000,000 in coverage. Be certain that it is general liability insurance and they are not “self-insured”. Over 75% of roofing companies don’t carry proper insurance to protect you and your home against potential losses. If your contractor has a bad (or even no) insurance policy that is unable to cover potential damages, the contractor will be personally liable. But if that contractor does not have the money to cover the damages themselves, you will have no legal recourse, and most likely end up paying for the repairs or even a new roof yourself.

Are They Manufacturer Certified?
It’s in the best interest of the biggest roofing shingle companies (like Owens Corning) to align themselves with the best contractors. Why? Because a poor roof installation has the ability to make their superior product look inferior through no fault of their own. That’s why they have come up with a manufacturer certification program, which requires contractors to show manufactures that they are certified.

Can They Provide References?
Ask for both customer and vendor. There is no better litmus test for a business. Can they provide you with satisfied customers who willingly tout the business to others, solely based on the company’s performance? To take it a step further ask for vendor references, ask if the company pays all their bills in time, you can never be too sure.

Do They Provide Quality Control and Inspection?
The contractor should give thorough quality control inspections during the roofing and insurance claim process. First, right after the roof was put on, to make certain that the first line of defense for your home was installed to the highest level of quality. And last, they should perform a walk-through with you after all the work to your home has been completed; making sure every last detail has been covered to your satisfaction.

We hope this list helps bring to light some new information and knowledge in your quest to find the best contractor for your roofing project. Feel free to browse around our site and find out what sets Christian Brothers Roofing apart from all the other roofing companies in the DFW Metroplex.
